1. Most importantly now that you do not have a conventional HS/F moving air over the CPU to cool the VRM section it will get hot. Hot enough to do what you describe.
2. That monster GPU, Fury R9, isn't helping much as it tends to enable a stale pocket of air in the upper left, right where the VRMs reside.
So, we come to 3. The two above only serve to aggravate an already tenuous warm/hot VRM section.
